#01 Lonesome

In 1995 I headed to the White River National Forest in northern Colorado for fall photography. To my dismay, fall colors were a complete failure and disappointment for Colorado residents, tourists, and enthusiastic photographers. Somewhat bewildered, I opened my road atlas in search of a new destination and as I scanned the map for possible alternatives, I decided to head for Monument Valley and then back across Colorado to the Great Sand Dunes.

On the dunes I found a single Sunflower as a fast approaching storm headed my way. I quickly set up my tripod and camera to compose the image, but lost the rays of the sun moments before I could capture it on film. With increasing winds and the front only minutes away, my attention became focused on the blowing sand and rain that plays havoc on photographic gear.

As I prepared to break down my equipment, the clouds parted for about twenty seconds as light danced across the dunes; I fired three fast frames and fortunately two were perfectly exposed.

I will always feel blessed to present this photograph as part of my portfolio... enjoy!
