#05 Desert Rock

This shot was actually the result of a dismal Aspen change for the state of Colorado in 1995. Without checking with Colorado friends to verify the progression of the Aspens, I headed for Colorado in my usual third week of September. Disappointment and - what do I photograph now, set in fast as I approached the high country, where a yellow leaf was nowhere to be found.

Frustrated with myself I grabbed my atlas, opened it to Utah and presto, there was Monument Valley staring back at me. Another tank of gas and the pedal to the metal, allowed me to reach Monument Valley late that night.

The next day I consulted with a Navajo Indian who informed me that access to the most photographic parts of Monument Valley would not be allowed without his presence. Early the next morning, money exchanged hands in what was still the darkness of night, and off we went in a four-wheel-drive jeep.

This photo along with photo #01 (Lonesome) was well worth the extended cost of the trip... enjoy!
