#08 Tumbleweed & Sand

The slot canyons of Page, Arizona, break all the rules for nature photography. For within these walls of reflected light that filters down from above, the best images are produced when the sun is virtually overhead.

Be prepared for extremely long exposures within the slots. To produce this image on film, the shutter remained open for a little over seven minutes. Due to the long exposure times, serious amateur and professional photographers will need patience, patience, and more patience when dealing with the point and shoot tourists who will invariably fire a flash halfway through your exposure.

Tumbleweed & Sand was recorded in upper Antelope Canyon. The entire length of the corridor runs about two hundred yards, and the width within these vertical walls varies from about ten or twelve feet down to just enough room to squeeze the human body through. I was particularly interested in this image due to the tumbleweed and sand that was perched on a ledge about nine feet overhead.

I spent well over two hours with this particular image which gives a new meaning to bracketing -- especially when you consider time exposures in excess of seven minutes... enjoy!
