#13 Shiprock

The town of Shiprock, New Mexico, was named after this magnificent rock that exploded straight up out of the face of the earth and exceeds a height of seventeen hundred feet. I would estimate that approximately four football fields could be laid end-to-end through its base, and fins protrude off the west and south sides for over a mile in each direction.

I must say that I was overwhelmed with its size and beauty as I walked around the entire base in the spring of 1999, scouting a vantage point for an early morning or evening shot. I photographed a rare morning shot during this trip but due to afternoon clouds that rolled in around 3:00 PM for three consecutive days, I never recorded the late evening shot that I so desperately wanted from this angle of view.

I returned to Shiprock in the fall and was blessed with two perfect days as I recorded this image... enjoy!
