#20 Burning Fire

In the fourth week of July, 1997, I was exploring the Wind River Range in Wyoming on a cool overcast day. Not a day particularly to my liking for scenic photography, I decided to scout for an early morning shot for the next morning.

I noticed a thin sliver of blue sky to the west as I came upon this scene with about an hour of daylight left in the day; unfortunately, the sky overhead was still a dreary gray. Since I liked the overall composition and gnarled foreground pine in this scene, I decided to wait and see what "Mother Nature" might offer before sundown.

Clouds continued to come in from the south and the thin sliver of blue wasn't gaining in size; however, I decided to setup my camera and compose the image with hopes of last minute miracles. With about ten minutes until sundown, the sky started to clear as the rays from the sun split the clouds and illuminated the top of the peaks.

I took a fast meter reading, reaffirmed my composition on my viewing screen and waited for the clouds to reach maximum color. With only a couple minutes of remaining sunlight left on the peaks, I fired three second exposures with hopes that what I saw would register on film with somewhat the same intensity... enjoy!
