#23 Tranquility

In July of 1995 I headed to my favorite area of southwest Colorado; the San Juan Mountains. My enthusiasm and eagerness to venture into new territory within the San Juan's made the trip across Kansas and Colorado seem somewhat shorter than usual.

I arrived at my location late the second day and desperately felt the need for exercise after sitting behind the wheel for the better part of two days. My intended destination was about six miles into the interior, so I figured I had enough time before sundown to cut that figure in half. As I started down the trail with my eighty-five pound pack on my back, it reminded me and confirmed my need for a llama, which I will name Paula.

Through a series of zigzags the trail led me up the side of a mountain which then leveled out for approximately two miles before starting into a gradual climb that would continue to my desired location. I pitched camp that evening and slept like a baby before awakening to a hard frost the next morning. Feeling refreshed, I had a little breakfast and then got back on the trail, reaching my destination around noon.

After pitching camp and consuming a little nourishment, I started my usual routine of scouting the area for a possible evening or early morning shot. I didn't find this spectacular composition until late the second day, which was about a mile from my campsite.

Up well before dawn the next morning, I was once again greeted to frost. I grabbed my gear that I always prepare the previous night and headed out to capture this image on film which turned out to be picture perfect... enjoy!
