#39 Twisted Trunks
The San Juan Mountains lie in the southwest corner of Colorado and are nothing short of spectacular during the fall if conditions are right. Aspens display colors from brilliant yellow to red, and depending upon winds and temperatures, this spectacle of color may last three to four weeks; or may almost end overnight.
The mountains were ablaze with color in the fall of 1998, and I was fortunate to receive a couple of overnight storms during my extended week that produced about five or six inches of snow on each occasion.
I refer to this image as Twisted Trunks, and consider it one of my favorites that make up my portfolio. I particularly like the snow clinging to the trunks of the Aspens, and the deep saturated yellow leaves were the result of the scene being softly backlit from behind.
Shortly after composing and shooting this photo, the snow began falling off the trunks of the Aspens due to rising temperatures... enjoy!
