#42 Mooney Falls

Mooney Falls is located on Navajo Land in Supai, Arizona, and is about one mile downstream from Havasu Falls. To reach either of these falls, you will have to backpack approximately ten miles, or pay the Navajo Indians to take you in by horseback.

While I backpacked each way with approximately eighty-five pounds of gear in my pack, my suggestion would be to backpack in since it's practically all downhill and then pay the Navajo's to pack your equipment out by horseback.

The lighting at Mooney Falls is more balanced than at Havasu, which makes it a little easier to photograph; however, getting down through the narrow passage that leads to the bottom of Mooney Falls with tripod and photo gear is definitely more difficult.

Once you've negotiated the steep climb down, the only problem photographing the falls is the constant mist that accumulates on the front element of your camera lens. Since I photograph with the RB67, composing an image is a little more time consuming, so I generally make it a habit to wipe the front element of my lens just before tripping the cable release when photographing around water falls of this size in nature.

Make a trip to Havasu and Mooney Falls; it will be an experience that you will not soon forget -- and yes, the water is as blue as you see in these photographs... enjoy!
